Hi there. I'm really enjoying your blog. I think the Mrs Bell Might be my grandmother. She lived kinda near you on Camden Circle. My dad grew up there as well.
ReplyDeleteChristen the Mrs Bell that I was talking about ran a little store out of the front of her house about half way between the creek and Wakefield Drive on Mercer. She was a widow, her husband died around 1930 and she never remarried. I think she may have had a son but never saw him as he was grown by the time I came along. I may have known your Dad back then. Camden Circle was Colonial Circle when I lived on Mercer. Seems like there was a Bell that lived in the Circle that was a Police Officer, may be wrong on that.
ReplyDeleteMy mother grew up on Mercer during the 50s-60s and then I did in the 70s-90s. I remember Mrs. Bell. By the time I came along, her store was on its last legs and all the goods were spread around her house along with powdered sulfur to keep out critters. Before Mrs. Bell passed my grandmother had the job of checking in on her for social services and I would go along. Her house was stuck in time and it was an experience - a dark, smelly, and creepy one, with a scary black dog and a mean black cat who came over once and killed my pet bird. She was always nice to me though. Eventually, a relative of hers ended up with the house and completely remodeled the whole thing. They have moved since. I remember the railroad down the road and how the bells would get stuck on regularly - not sure how the folks living next to it didn't go insane. We never jumped on for a ride, but put pennies on the tracks and walked home from Forest Hills across the bridge. The street is so different now, unfortunately, with drug houses being a very big problem. Thanks for the blog posts.
